<image:title>MJB Ecology Home - Maps for conservation and ecology</image:title>
<image:caption>Maps are essential tools for ecology and conservation. Maps can be used to visually demonstrate information about biodiversity in a quick and intuitive way. I use ARCGIS Pro as my map system of choice and can produce maps for a variety of applications; from enhancing your PEA, plotting the impact of conservation action to demonstrating future climate impacts on species’ ranges.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About - Experience.</image:title>
<image:caption>My ecology and conservation experience is broad and covers over 20 years, from ecological surveys to curating a zoo Reptile and Amphibian department. As a Curator of Reptiles and Amphibians, I was keen to participate in and lead multiple ecology surveys. Thankfully, survey techniques are transferrable skills and are applicable in any biome and so I have carried out ecology surveys in the UK and continental Africa. In fact, I started my career working for the National Rivers Authority surveying salmon and trout populations in Devon and Cornwall. Latterly, I designed and implemented surveys in Tanzania and Mauritius, built a bio-secure facility for amphibian conservation breeding and much, much more… I am also an IUCN Species Survival Comission Amphibian Specialist Group member and a Member of the Board of Trustees for the Foundation for Extraordinary Plants. Current surveys for MJB Ecology include; habitat assessment, water vole presence/absence, habitat management, and advising on pollution mitigation for Great Crested Newt ponds.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Ecological Services - Ecological Surveys - Bats</image:title>
<image:caption>All bats in the UK have stringent legal protection which includes their roosts and habitats. The type of bat survey required varies depending on the potential of a site to contain bats and their roosts. The suitability of a site for bats can initially be assessed within the PEA. If you have bats present or potential roosts at your site, it is likely that further surveys will be essential.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Ecological Services - Ecological Surveys - Great Crested Newt</image:title>
<image:caption>Like bats, Great Crested Newts (GCN) receive a level of legal protection greater than other UK species. During a PEA, any waterbodies present at a site or in the surrounding area, will be assessed for the their suitability to contain Great Crested Newts. Further surveys are recommended depending on the findings of the PEA.</image:caption>

<image:title>Ecological Services - Ecological Surveys - Preliminary Ecological Survey (PEA)</image:title>
<image:caption>PEAs (also known as Phase 1 Habitat Surveys) are often required as a basic stage in a development, big or small. They are a mechanism by which the environmental importance of a site can be measured; types of habitats, their extent and condition, and whether they can potentially support protected species. PEAs and Desktop Surveys are accompanied by a full report of findings and recommendations. I will also comment on the potential environmental impact of the project. Surveys start at £750.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Ecological Services - Ecological Surveys - Desktop Survey</image:title>
<image:caption>The starting point for all surveys. A desktop survey answers a fundamental question; have any protected species or important habitats been reported at the site or within the surrounding area? In other words, what can we reasonably expect to find? We always recommend a desktop survey in conjunction with a PEA (see below) to be thorough. Desktop surveys start at £250.</image:caption>
